If you’re working with someone who doesn’t have a following online, it is important to think about how you will go about developing a following.  You want to be successful at it.  The first thing is to look at your product or service.

Social media and SEO training is a great place to start.  You can influence your customers to buy from you if you put out great stuff.  What you want to do is to start building up your character.  People have to want to listen to what you have to say.  I’m lucky for I write lot of articles that tell people how to do SEO, so I have my share of a following of people that read that stuff that I write.

When I wrote my first few articles, I didn’t have a following of people that would read my stuff.  You have to keep this in mind when you are talking about this topic.  You have two camps.  There’s my corner and there is the other one.  The other one just says that it is a numbers game when it comes down to using social media.

You have the out of date television sales mentality of listeners where they say, we have a million viewers.  Well a million viewers don’t really mean anything.  You have tons of celebrities that have millions of views and they might use social media, but it really doesn’t mean anything if they isn’t any interaction.

It’s not the number of followers that you have that is important; it is the number of people that interact with you that’s important.  When they retweet you, it is like they are having a conversation with you because they are telling their friends all about you.  They see you as putting out good information.

When I work with a new client, we’ll start by building a persona for them.  We ask a few questions.  What makes you compelling and interesting?  What can we do?  How do we need to show up to be consistent?  People want to see a personal brand to connect with.

You work on a one to one basis when you work with social media.  You’re attaching your character to something that has a voice.  You could be a large or small company, so long as what you do has some kind of regular activity.  It’s important that you plan everything your going to be doing out.

Give people what they want.  It doesn’t matter who is going to be listening to what you have to say.  It doesn’t have to be that impressive, just get out and deliver something to your audience.

People expect to see a certain type of person in front of them, so become that person.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to develop a following.  Just find out what you want to do and deliver your stuff to them on a regularly.
