Why You Need To Own The Racecourse And Not The Racehorse

Today, I’ve decided to share one of the most important pieces of advice I have ever gotten from one of my Internet marketing mentors. In particular, I will show you how it all applies to the world of internet marketing.
Why You Should Own The Racecourse
My mentor once told me that in order to be successful “you must own the racecourse, not the racehorse.”
It seems very logical because the person who makes the most money are not the owners of the racehorses who visit the racecourse for training and racing, but the owner of the racecourse who gets rent and other payments from the owners of the racehorses who use the facility. Furthermore, the owner of the racecourse is in firm control of what and when a racehorse can use the facility. This means that they can decide how much to charge racehorse owners and the way they run events at the racecourse (for greater profits).
The racehorse might be a champion horse but it only takes an injury which could end its career and leave the owner scrambling for income. The racecourse owner won’t be the one crying if a horse has to end its racing career through injury because there are other horses who can replace it. The racecourse owner may even shut up shop one day and take all the profits with him and leaving the racehorse owners desperate for a new venue and a new income source.
As you can notice, there are more benefits to be gained by owning the racecourse.
So how does this all relate to internet marketing?
Taking Control Of Your Content
Everyone is capable of writing great content and sharing it with the world. In addition, everyone is aware that good content is what will get you backlinks, traffic and eventually sales.
However, what many people continue to do online is hand over control of their content to third-party websites such as Ezine Directories. What I mean is that people write articles and submit them directly to as many ezine directories such as Ezine Articles and Go Articles.
I have previously written an article about the importance of submitting your article to as many directories as possible (and using article submission services).
This is still important, however, you should only submit articles to third-party websites AFTER posting it on your own website (or blog).
Read the previous sentence many times over, it’s that important.
The reality is that many people online are building up the asset of ezine directories online instead of their own asset. You work hard and use all your knowledge all for building someone else’s asset. It sounds crazy! It’s just like using your racehorse to build up the reputation and value of a racecourse. Get my drift?
By posting your articles on your website (or blog) first, you will start getting links back to your website and build up your own asset.
The same thing applies to videos and podcasts you create. You must post your own content on your own website first!
I must admit that I was guilty of committing this important mistake in my first year of internet marketing. Once I start building up my own assets, my online income increased dramatically. I wish I’d known this much earlier.
So my message to you today is: own the racecourse and not the racehorse.
