Just what the heck is domain flipping?

Put simply, it’s the art of buying a domain name cheap and selling it on at a profit. In much the same way as it used to be possible to buy a house cheap and sell it on again for a profit.

Which sounds easy - and quite often, it’s so easy you likely won’t believe it can be done.

There are a number of different ways you can get into the domain flipping business.

The simplest way is to purchase a domain name that you like the sound of and sell it on, without doing anything to it. If you’ve got a buyer in mind before purchasing your domain name, this may be all that you need to do. Especially if you’re good at discovering potential type-in typos even with modern browsers and auto-complete (if you always spell “New York” as “New Tork” because you’re in a hurry for example) keep a note of your typos and think about buying the name if you think others will type as hurriedly as you.

Consider predictable future events that will be valuable but hasn’t been noticed yet. Moveable events like the Olympics for instance where there is a build up before the event and massive traffic during the event itself.

Probably the majority of people who flip domains take another steo and add value to their domain name. Face up to it, not too many people can find that one special domain that’s instantly worth thousands of dollars. Most of the time, you’ll need extra goodies to give your buyer an extra reason to buy the domain names you’re selling. Anything from selling a batch of related names sending traffic to the domain and Google Page Rank of the sites you’re developing.

Which means that the domain flipping market can be a mixture of short term “buy and sell” deals, medium term where you build a bit of traffic and turning a decent profit when you sell on the site and long term where you’re making so much income that you’d need a hefty check to tempt you to sell your domain.
