Wikipedia shuts the door on link spammers

It is now official that all outbound links in Wikipedia will be tagged with the “nofollow” attribute. A link from Wikipedia has always been considered very important for SEOs trying to increase a site’s pagerank. After battling link spammers (not necessarily legitimate SEOs) Jimbo Wales, founder of Wikipedia, has announced that all outbound links will not be protected with “nofollow.”

“At Jimbo Wales’ directive, all external links within the English language Wikipedia are now coded “nofollow” — this should help cut spamming immensely once word gets out in the SEO community.

This was mentioned in the discussion Wikipedia:Administrators’ noticeboard#Globalwarming awareness2007/SEO world championship — expect a spam onslaught.”

You can read more about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam.

It was about time this happened! I congratulate Wikipedia for having the strength to fight link spammers.
