What they don’t tell you about affiliate product marketing with AdWords

I am certain that by now you have come across one (and probably more) websites that promise to teach you how to make money online easily by selling affiliate products via Google AdWords marketing.
You can do it in 3 easy steps. First, you have to register with Google for a free AdWords account. Second, you have to get a free account with ClickBank, Commission Junction, Azoogle Ads or any other similar marketplace of affiliate products. Third, you have to select an affiliate product that you wish to market, do some keyword research and create a few AdWords ads. After you complete these three simple and free steps, you just have to sit back and relax because the money is going to start rolling in immediately. Yeah, right!
So, what is it they are not telling you? First of all, keyword research is not something that you can do in half an hour. It takes a lot of study to find a good collection of cheap keywords that have a high conversion rate. The more obvious keywords are very competitive and cost too much per click since too many people bid on them. Second and most important, to make money with AdWords you have to spend a good amount of money to begin with. Forget setting your daily AdWords spending limit to just a few dollars. If the cost per click for your keywords is high then chances are that your ad will receive just a few clicks every day. If your ad’s conversion rate is around 1% then it will be many days before you make a single sale. Expect to have to spend no less than $200 per day on AdWords if you hope to start making some money. In fact, you are probably going to have to spend even more. If you want proof of this then consider reading the following post (and this one) by Jeremy Shoemaker who is a guru when it comes to making money online.
At the end of the day, making money with AdWords is something that requires a large time and money commitment. If you do not research your keywords carefully then you might end up spending too much on AdWords to make a profit. Also, if you do not select the affiliate product that you are marketing carefully and if you don’t write good, highly converting ads then you might end up losing all your money very fast. Only experienced marketers can achieve a high return on investment (ROI) with AdWords marketing.
There is no such thing as a free meal, so don’t get sucked in by clever marketers promising to show you the secrets to overnight wealth if you buy their overpriced eBook. There is no secret. Only hard work pays off. Consider yourself warned!
Oh, and happy new year to all of you!

Gee, i wish i had read this a few weeks ago! I posted in my blog about my My Adwords Failure that cost me a few hundred $$ .
I should have known how difficult it was after reading about Shoemoney’s failure.
I can’t afford to get rich with AdWords!

Great post, but $200 per day sounds like a lot! I’ll probably wait before I start running money making websites before starting with AdWords again … right now the conversion rate could be $0 and I’d still make nothing
