Net neutrality has been a hot topic this year. It is talked about in traditional media, the blogosphere and last summer the US House of Representatives. But what is net neutrality? Well, it turns out that this is not the easiest question to answer because it is a highly controversial topic requiring several pages of text just to scratch the surface. But for most people, net neutrality can be defined as the “right” to access all nodes in a network equally well. For example, if you are paying an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for Internet access then the ISP should not slow down or block access to a subset of websites but instead it should allow equal access to all of them. The use of traffic shaping by ISPs in order to control P2P services is one example of net neutrality being violated.
There is a good explanation of net neutrality in Wikipedia and a search on Google returns lots of high-quality results. There are also a number of videos freely available that try to explain the basic notion of net neutrality. Here is one such video that does a good job explaining what net neutrality is and how an ISP can take advantage of its customers if net neutrality is not existent.
